On 29th July 2014 at Central Festival Phuket a press conference was held to announce details of the 3rd Go Eco Phuket activity, Thailand’s largest diving cleanup event and an event that will see a huge clean up of the reefs around the islands of Racha Yai and Racha Noi. The press conference was attended by Khun Pawinee Punnakan from the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion, Phuket Vice Governor – Sommai Preechasil, Capt Petcharat Teanjan from the Third Naval Area Command, Phuket Provincial Police Deputy – Commander Pinit Sirichai, Marine and Coastal Resources Conservation Center 5 Director – Khun Tanet Munnoy as well as members of the Go Eco Phuket network, members of the general public and media.
Along with the reef cleaning activity, the 3rd Go Eco Phuket event, to be held on 3rd August 2014, will also feature a range of activities which will be held at Chalong Pier in Amphur Muang. The additional activities will include exhibitions from government agencies and the public sector, fashion clothes made from trash, fun activities which will provide knowledge about waste disposal, teaching techniques, underwater photography, and more.
The main diving event will see a large number of volunteers dive at the reefs around Racha Yai and Racha Noi collecting rubbish dropped by fishermen and visitors to the area. The event is collaboration between both the public and private sectors and is held in order to maintain the natural resources of the area, and to raise awareness of the impact on dropping garbage into the sea.
