Special Report: Bang Wad Dam expansion startsThe Royal Irrigation Department is the governing authority responsible for the development of the island’s water resources and has considered many projects to ensure that Bang Wad Dam is used to its maximum potential, one such project being increasing the capacity of the reservoir so an increases amount of water can be entrapped during the rainy season. The final design of the upgraded reservoir will mean that the original capacity of 7.31 million cubic meters will increase to 10.60 million cubic meters to ensure there are no shortages during the dry season. Furthermore it will reduce the risk of floods to the area of Klong Bang Yai.

Members of the Phuketindex.com team recently visited the site to survey the progress of work being carried out in heightening the walls of the damn and can advise our readers that soil has already been placed all around the reservoir and compacted and retaining stone walls are currently being built to support the earth. When the construction works are complete, the dam will be approximately 902 meters wide and will increase in height from 2 to 8 meters adding an additional water capacity of 3.29 million cubic meters.

The construction began on October 1st, 2014 and is scheduled to be complete on September 30th, 2015. The project will use a total budget of 120 million baht.
