On 8th November 2014, Phuket Governor – Khun Nisit Jansomwong, Phuket Highways Office Director – Khun Samak Lued-Wonghad, Maj Sakchai Chunyong of Phuket City Police and relevant officers met to check on the construction progress of both the Darasamuth and Samkong underpasses and also to monitor traffic at the Bang Koo Junction. It was also a chance for the officials to meet with contractors to discuss preparations made to accommodate traffic during the Asian Beach Games being held from 14th – 23rd November 2014.
Following the inspection, Khun Nisit said “We have concluded to stop all construction work on the underpasses during the beach games to ease some of the traffic problems. It is essential that all lanes are open during this time so that traffic can flow more freely. It has been agreed that three lanes at the Darasamuth Intersection underpass be open during the time the games are being held. I have also instructed the contractors to clear and prepare the road surfaces and remove the barriers to make more room on the road.
He added that lighting should also be should be installed to help reduce the risk of accidents.
